The children have a morning breaktime at about 10.20 a.m. Up until their fifth birthday, the children are entitled to a free cup of milk. After this, parents can make a termly payment, if they wish their child to continue to have milk. All the children receive a piece of fruit for their break.
All KS1 children (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) are entitled to a free school meal. The food is provided by Aspens, this is ordered by parents on Parentpay. The children eat their meal in the school dining hall. Staff are always on hand to help children with cutting up food and will support the development of these skills.
Morning playtime takes place in the smaller Longships Class playground. The children drink their milk and eat their fruit. They then have access to a large sand pit, a wood chip kitchen and café, a pirate ship, a Music wall and performance stage, a Maths area and a reading garden. Large scale toys such as ball runs, logs, tyres and construction blocks are also provided.
After lunch, the children are able to use the larger playground, the vegetable garden, the tranquility area, the trim trail and the school field. Play equipment is provided from the Huff and Puff shed.
School finishes at 3.15 p.m. Longships Class staff will bring the children to the gate of the small playground and will only release the children when we see their parents. Please inform the school if someone else is collecting your child from school.
At Kehelland Village School, we have a positive behaviour policy, recognising those children who show that they are Ready, Respectful and Safe. In Longships Class, we have a star chart, where children who demonstrate these qualities in the course of the day are rewarded with a gold star in their diaries. The chart in the photograph helps explain what Ready, Respectful and Safe look like. Our Behaviour Policy is strongly supported by our Virtues Character Education, where children learn about the character virtues that help them to be good learners and good friends. Children who display the virtues are given verbal praise, and each week a Lighthouse Keeper Certificate is awarded to the child who has excelled in the demonstration of a virtue. For example, they might have shown diligence and enthusiasm in their work, determination and courage in P.E., caring and kindness towards their friends or creativity in Art. We also award a Class reader of the week, and a school Shining Light, for the child who has gone above and beyond in some way. All award children receive a certificate and the treat of hot chocolate or ice cream time with our head teacher, Mrs. Watkins.
The Reception children have one half term of swimming lessons each year, that is a block of 6-7 weekly lessons in the second part of the Spring term. The children swim in their class groups. Swimming usually takes place on a Friday afternoon at Carn Brea Leisure Centre. The children travel to and from Carn Brea by bus. The Reception children start in the learner pool in a small group of 6-8 children, taught by a qualified swimming instructor, and assisted in the pool by their teacher, Mrs. Davies or their teaching assistant, Mrs. Johnson. Mrs.Davies also has Level 1 qualification as a swimming instructor. As the children make progress, they move to higher level groups in the main pool.
Longships Class children receive one double lesson of PE each week, one of which may be the swimming session on a Friday. The school follows the Real PE programme which focuses on making Physical Education an enjoyable activity, developing the children's physical, social, personal, cognitive and creative skills, as well as making them aware of the importance of health and fitness. The lessons are taught either by a Go Active teacher. In addition, we take part in the Daily Run first thing in the morning, completing laps of the school field or playground As well as developing fitness, these short regular bursts of activity improve mental wellbeing and concentration, and develop the virtues of determination and resilience.
